TOPIC Assertiveness as Active Engagement (℠): Strategies for Scientific and Technical Women

Women are often advised to be more assertive. Research shows that men ask for more and they get more - in salaries, promotions, and visibility. But there can be a cost to women if they are perceived as not assertive or aggressive. What's a woman to do?
This workshop will share strategies and techniques for a set of behaviors called Assertiveness as Active Engagement (℠). Topics include:
• Self-confidence: Believing it and projecting it
• Strategy: Analyzing, planning, and implementing assertive behaviors
• Techniques: Ten specific techniques to have in your toolkit including persuasion skills to market your ideas effectively.
• Technical Culture: Key considerations specific to a technical environment
You will leave this workshop with an action plan to begin Assertiveness as Active Engagement your next day at work.

Workshop Leaders
- Vivian Eyre is president of Partners for Women's Growth Inc. ®, a coaching firm dedicated to enhancing leadership skills in the context of organizational culture. She specializes in coaching mid level women in high tech and financial services industries. Prior to starting Partners in 1994, Vivian was Vice President of Human Resources for Macmillan Publishing Company where she was one of two women who served on the Executive Committee. Vivian teaches the Women in Leadership seminar at Cornell University-ILR School. This public seminar is up-coming at Harvard University 's Workplace Development Center in spring 2011.
- Carol Rosa Sabia is a partner at Sheerline Associates. Carol has more than 20 years experience coaching and developing technical staff – at BBN Technologies, Honeywell Inc., Babson University , SBA's Women's Network for Entrepreneurial Training, and Cornell University 's Women in Leadership program. Carol has held line management positions in multiple high tech companies, including Plant Manager at Honeywell Electro-Optics and Business Unit Vice President at BBN Technologies. In addition, she created and served as the Vice President of Talent Management at BBN Technologies from 2000-2010. Carol has a M.B.A from Boston College and an Ed.M. from Harvard University.
